Tree House Office

Tree office? Why not! If I lived in a moderate climate conducive to year-round outdoor living, I'd definitely be in the market for a tree house office. Surrounded by nature, dappled sunlight spilling across the floor, a leafy view, birds chirping. Absolutely!

The Porch House

I came across architect Gregory La Vardera's website last year while looking for inexpensive contemporary modular and prefab housing. Then I stumbled on it again while reading some back issues of Dwell. The design pictured above is for The Porch House, a cozy 2-BR cabin in winter and a spacious outdoor room in summer, in effect a screened in porch. He's got a number of stock plans to choose from and they can all be built using standard construction methods.

Durat Fixtures: Recycled to Last

Durat is a Finnish company whose mission is to unite design and recycling. The company collects plastic waste from all over Scandinavia to recycle into a material suitable for tubs and sinks that is also recyclable--although I can't fathom why anyone would ever want to get rid of fixtures like the sleek tub and sink pictured here! Resistant to humidity, chemicals, and wear, it can be sanded to renew its finish, and comes in a host of contemporary fresh colors.

Space in a Box

Better than cubicles, cheaper than buying a studio apartment in Manhattan! The brainchild of Mart de Jong, these modular, semi-permanent studio units are manufactured in the Netherlands. Easy to ship, install, and disassemble, they are made from high-grade composite materials. The units are 17m2 (just under 200SF) and equipped with water, sewage, electrical, and telephone hook-ups and include a kitchen and bathroom.
